John Buultjens: Drumchapel BMX king taking Hollywood by storm with harrowing life story

Early history[ edit ] Recent studies of the archaeology of old Govan have revealed the presence of an ancient Christian church. Two associated Christian burials are radiocarbon dated to the 5th or 6th centuries, making Govan the earliest known Christian site in the region. During the Viking Age , perhaps following the sack of Dumbarton Rock in , Govan is believed to have been one of the major centres of the Kingdom of Strathclyde. According to John of Fordun , Constantine , a 7th-century king of Strathclyde, founded a monastery at Govan, where he died and was buried. It may have been used to contain the body or relics of Constantine, although the style of carving indicates an origin in the 10th or 11th centuries. Kentigern by Jocelyn of Furness , where he is said to have been son of Riderch Hael. The early church in Govan is dedicated to a Saint Constantine , about whom nothing else is known. This is a 12th-century Latin source, but one believed to be based on much earlier materials; it records a place near Dumbarton Rock named Ouania.

History[ edit ] Pollok was built by the old Glasgow Corporation and was the first of the big four peripheral housing schemes built to improve Glasgow’s slum housing conditions in the inner city. The urgent need for housing after the war along with budgetary constraints meant that the original plan to build a ‘garden suburb’ was abandoned in favour of higher density, lower quality housing. Pollok suffered the same social problems that also emerged from the other large housing schemes Castlemilk , Drumchapel and Easterhouse.

The slum clearance programme disrupted the network of the old communities and the extended family. There were few shops, no pubs, cinemas or leisure facilities. People lived far away from their places of work and there were very few employment opportunities locally. The post-war tenement buildings were of poor quality and suffered from damp, condensation and lack of soundproofing.

Glasgow Corporation later Glasgow District Council could not maintain the buildings in the face of budgetary cuts imposed by central Government. Local manufacturing jobs were outsourced to overseas countries and unemployment rates grew to unprecedented levels. Those who were able to left the area, the remaining population enduring poverty, lack of opportunities, ill-health and lower life expectancy.

In recent years there has been a sustained effort to improve the area.

By Mark Nicoll 30 November I grew up in Bearsden in the late 60s and early 70s so the Milngavie branch was my first introduction to real trains. OK, the staple diet of Blue Trains may not be the most exotic of railway traction but for me as a young child it was the most thrilling experience to be able to watch them slip past. Frequently I would walk to the shops at Bearsden Cross with my grandmother from the top of Boclair Road.

In my insatiable desire to travel by train, I was able to persuade her many times to get the train back from Bearsden to Hillfoot even if it meant waiting for 20mns or more for the half hourly service! It was a two minute journey by train and you could walk it in less than ten! It is easier to start a description of the branch as you come on to it at Westerton. The junction here marks the start of the short branch.

There’s no doubt that for those wishing to take up dancing, clubs and associations with qualified tutors and teachers are the best way to learn so why not take a look at our dance club listings to find a suitable club, tutor or school in your area? By joining a dance club, you’ll not only be learning the actual dances but improving your posture and the overall picture you present to those around you by moving in a more graceful and rhythmic way.

Remember, learning to dance is as much about choosing the right dance teacher as it is about choosing the right dance school. If you are a dance teacher, club or school you can submit a listing and update a listing. Dancing Teachers and Tutors If you’re planning to learn to dance, always remember that a dance school is only ever as good as the dance teachers that instruct the classes.

The kind of qualifications one would expect a dance tutor to have will vary greatly depending on the type of dance school and the level of expertise expected at the end of the course. A dance teacher employed by a full-time ballet school would, for example, require much higher qualifications than a dance tutor who instructs a weekly evening class aimed at amateurs wishing to learn the basics of a specific style of dance. But that doesn’t mean you should join a dance class led by a dance teacher who has neither qualifications or experience as even casual dance lessons should leave you able to hold your own on the dance floor.

It’s therefore important that you speak to the dance teacher before joining a class, and ask about both their dance and tutoring experience. If a child will be attending the dance class, it’s important that the dance tutor has experience of teaching children as children’s dance classes are very different to those held for adults. A dance teacher may be highly experienced at teaching adult dance classes but may not necessarily be qualified to teach children who learn at a different pace and on a different level.

Dance tutors are also available to give personal one-to-one classes either in a dance studio or in your own home.
